10 steps to build a kick-ass social media strategy and get results! (Bonus: Grab the Cheatsheet)

by | Sep 7, 2019

Want to build a successful brand online? Social media is the place to get started because not only that it is free but it’s a freaking power-packed tool!

Having said that, a lot of people don’t make sales on social media because they don’t have a strategy in place. I created a poll on Instagram a few weeks ago and asked my audience if they had an Instagram strategy in place. 73% of them said that they didn’t. That shocked me! Hence, this blog post. This month is going to be all about building a kick-ass social media strategy!⁣⁣⁣⁣

I have broken down the social media strategy creation into 10 steps:

  1. Goal Setting

Did you know, according to science only 8 percent of people actually achieve their goals? That’s right! If you are in the remaining 92%, let’s change that.

The first step in creating a successful strategy is setting a goal. ⁣⁣⁣⁣Set 2-3 main goals for the month for your business.

Heard about S.M.A.R.T goal setting technique? S.M.A.R.T goal setting technique is a commonly used method. S-Specific, M-Measurable, A-Achievable, R-Realistic, T-Timebound.⁣⁣⁣⁣

I found a new technique which blew my mind away! Adam Kreek, an Olympic gold medalist, developed the “CLEAR” goal technique. This method incorporates emotional quotient and adaptability.

C – Collaborative⁣⁣⁣⁣, L – Limited⁣⁣⁣⁣, E- Emotional⁣⁣⁣⁣, A- Appreciable⁣⁣⁣⁣, R- Refinable. (More about the CLEAR technique) ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣

We align our social media strategy to achieve our business goals in the next steps. If a social media strategy not aligned with your business goals, it is bound to fail.

Example to set goals that you can actually achieve:

Not-so clear goals: Sell the ebook

CLEAR goals:

  • Sell at least 20 ebooks in 1 month to generate income.
  • Collaborate with entrepreneurs for story takeover.
  • Show up every day on Instagram every day

These goals incorporate all the elements of CLEAR. Now that you have your monthly goals, you know exactly where you want to land in 4 weeks time.

Now we reverse engineer to create a strategy!

  1. Choose social media platforms

Think about who your target audience is, where do they hang out and also which platforms you enjoy using.

The 7 biggest social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, and Reddit.

Do you need to be on all of them? NOPE!

This is a big mistake people make when they begin social media marketing for their business. They want to be on all the platforms because they don’t want to miss an opportunity.

In reality, by trying to be present everywhere, you are not leveraging any platform to its full potential. Hence, no results. You have a business to run and trying to manage 4-7 platforms at once is an overwhelming task.

If you are a solopreneur or a small team, choose 2-3 platforms that match your target audience and go all-in on those!!

  1. Brainstorm Ideas

Time for a brainstorming session! I love this part because you let your creativity flowing.  Content creation can be exhausting and overwhelming. But, dumping all your thoughts on paper or on your computer it makes the process a whole lot easier. Brain dump all your ideas and thoughts. I use a physical planner instead of digital because I work via my screen all day long.

Everything is right in front of you.

When I do a brainstorming session I write down everything I could possibly do to achieve the big goal? Being a social media strategist and a coach, this is what I could do:

  • Create IG feed
  • Create IGTV Videos
  • Create IG stories
  • Engage with IG audience
  • Collaborate
  • Story Takeover
  • Create a freebie to gain email subscribers….. There are endless ideas!!

You have all the ideas laid out in front of you. I am sure your head feels a little lighter to get it all out!

  1. Choose the content type

We brainstormed ideas but you don’t have to do every single thing. Trying to do it all can be overwhelming. Choose what kind of content you want to create before you set your weekly goals.

Don’t put the pressure of doing everything, choose 3-4 content types and start off with that.

  1. Plan Weekly goals + tasks

Break your big goals and content ideas down into weekly goals + tasks

We have all the ideas laid down now, let’s go ahead and choose the ideas to put in practice for this month. Map out your action steps.

Reminder, doing more is not always good. Look at the bigger goal that we wrote own in step 3 and break that down into weekly goals.

For instance, my weekly goals to sell the ebook would look like this:

  • Create 4 IG feed posts per week
  • Create Instagram stories every day
  • Connect with 20 new people every day

When you have the main goal in mind, you can split the action steps that need on a weekly basis to achieve that goal.

  1. Daily action steps

Time for the last reverse engineering step.

You have the main goal + the weekly goal, now let’s set tasks for each day to achieve your weekly goal.

Potential daily tasks to achieve the goal to sell the ebook:

  • Show up on stories every day
  • Engage with your target audience twice a week

Taking small steps daily will result in social media success.

  1. Explore content ideas

Let’s explore content ideas. Think about 1-2 topics you want to focus on this month. It’s always a good idea to explore what your competitors are talking about and hot topics in your industry (Buzzsumo is a good spot to find out).

Did you know it takes less than 10 mins to find content ideas? Quora is an amazing tool to search for questions people are asking about that topic. Read through the post!

  1. Create content

Pour a cup of coffee, put on some music and crack on with content creation. Go with a pace you are comfortable with, you don’t have to batch a month’s worth of content in one go. Start with creating one week’s worth of content or even block time every day to do it daily.

Don’t feel the pressure that you have to batch content. It’s a practice which is not for everybody and it takes time to get the hang of it.

Do what works for you. It’s a good idea to batch the content topic, images, hashtags, etc if writing the copy is overwhelming. So, even if you do it on the day, you know exactly what topic you are writing about.

Every platform has some basic things that need to be in place before you can hit that publish button. For instance, researching hashtags is a time-consuming process especially finding high performing hashtags that get you results. That’s why I created the Instagram Hashtag Strategy Decoded Ebook! I have shared my 3-step fail-proof process you can follow every time you create a hashtag strategy. If you put these steps in action, you will have high performing hashtags that will not only drive traffic to your content but also, get you results every single time.  BONUS: Along with all the strategies and secrets, you also get your hands on a CHECKLIST and a WORKBOOK to dig deeper into the strategy.

  1. Schedule + Publish

This is the easy step, you have everything in place and all you need to do is schedule the content using scheduling tools. I LOVE Later! I have tried others such as Buffer, Eclincher, Hootsuite but Later is by far my favorite. Its user experience is so smooth and it’s super easy to use for individuals as well as for social media managers.

  1. Engage with your audience.

This is the step a lot of people skip when they talk about social media strategy. Engage with your audience; this is one of the most important steps to maximize results.

DON’T POST AND GHOST!!

All social media platforms want you to spend more and more time on their platform. For instance, your Instagram content will perform better if engagement is good within 1 hour of posting. So, if you are replying to comments, the Instagram algorithm would work in your favor. Similarly, on other social media platforms, engaging with your audience will help you reach your social media goals.

If you post and ghost, all the effort you have put in till now will go to waste. To get real results on social media, you need to build a community and relationships by engaging with people. This is how you drive traffic to your content which leads to sales.

Getting the foundation right will get you results. Having a solid strategy for your social media is the part a lot of people miss out on. Don’t be one of those people if you want to see your business grow on social media and build a kick-ass brand.

These were the 10 steps to build a kick-ass social media strategy and get results! It’s a lot of content to take in so I have created a CHEATSHEET with a one-page view of the entire 10-step strategy, super handy when you want to build yours! Grab it here:
